It seems fitting to conclude this season’s Why Write? series as deftly as Daryl Scroggins began it. And who is more deft than Edward Mullany?
An old woman tells the story of how, in her youth, she fell in love with a man who was not the man she would later marry. She tells this story to her granddaughter, who is now a young woman herself, while the two of them are sitting side by side on a porch swing on a porch attached to a home that houses other men and women the old woman’s age.
Or, on a plateau, at sunset, a man on horseback is shot from his horse while galloping away from another group of men on horseback.
